Functions
extracellular-glycine-gated chloride channel activity / glycine binding / transmitter-gated ion channel activity
Processes
chloride transmembrane transport / gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor clustering / ion transmembrane transport / neurological system process / neuropeptide signaling pathway / regulation of membrane potential / response to amino acid / synaptic transmission, glycinergic / transmembrane transport
Components
axon terminus / cell junction / chloride channel complex / external side of plasma membrane / integral component of plasma membrane / neuron projection / plasma membrane / postsynaptic membrane / synapse
General Function
Transmitter-gated ion channel activity
Specific Function
The glycine receptor is a neurotransmitter-gated ion channel. Binding of glycine to its receptor increases the chloride conductance and thus produces hyperpolarization (inhibition of neuronal firing).
