EVT 302 is used in smoking cessation. It is a reversible and highly selective inhibitor of monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B). MAOs are enzymes involved in the catabolism of monoamine neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, serotonin, and norephinephrine. Cigarette smoking produces inhibition of brain MAO activity in humans. Since monoamines are involved in the reinforcing and rewarding effects of tobacco smoking, the use of MAO inhibitors (MAOIs) has been proposed as a treatment for tobacco dependence.
