Drugs used to specifically facilitate learning or memory, particularly to prevent the cognitive deficits associated with dementias. These drugs act by a variety of mechanisms. While no potent nootropic drugs have yet been accepted for general use, several are being actively investigated.
Drug Drug Description Choline A nutrient found in a wide variety of vitamins including pre-natal formulations. Galantamine A cholinesterase inhibitor used to manage mild to moderate dementia associated with Alzheimer's Disease. Nicergoline An ergot derivative use for the treatment of symptoms associated with cerebrovascular abnormalities. Donepezil An acetylcholinesterase inhibitor used to treat the behavioral and cognitive effects of Alzheimer's Disease and other types of dementia. Aniracetam A nootropic drug used to ameliorate memory and attention disturbances accompanying cerebrovascular diseases and degenerative brain disorders. Cutamesine Investigated for use/treatment in strokes and depression. Piracetam A nootropic cyclic GABA derivative used in myoclonus, sickle cell disease, alcohol dependence, and as a general cognitive enhancer. Omega-3-acid ethyl esters A mixture of fatty acids used as an adjunct to diet to reduce triglyceride (TG) levels in adult patients with severe hypertriglyceridemia. Vinpocetine A synthetic derivative of a vinca alkaloid used to treat neurological symptoms of cerebrovascular disease. Nefiracetam Nefiracetam has been used in trials studying the treatment of Alzheimer's Disease. Ergoloid mesylate A nootropic with an unknown mechanism of action indicated in individuals over sixty who manifest signs and symptoms of an idiopathic decline in mental capacity. Acetylcarnitine An acetylated form of the amino acid derivative L-carnitine that assists in mitochondrial fatty acid metabolism. It is under investigation as a treatment for numerous conditions, including neuropathy, depression, and dementia.
