Bile Acids and Salts
- Bile Acids and Salts
- Accession Number
Steroid acids and salts. The primary bile acids are derived from cholesterol in the liver and usually conjugated with glycine or taurine. The secondary bile acids are further modified by bacteria in the intestine. They play an important role in the digestion and absorption of fat. They have also been used pharmacologically, especially in the treatment of gallstones.
Drug Drug Description Cholic Acid A bile acid used for the treatment of bile acid synthesis disorders due to single enzyme defects and as an adjunctive treatment of peroxisomal disorders with disrupted liver function. Ursodeoxycholic acid A bile acid used for the treatment of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), dissolution of radiolucent gallstones in patients with a functioning gallbladder, and treatment of hepatobiliary disorders associated with cystic fibrosis in pediatric patients. Glycochenodeoxycholic Acid A bile salt formed in the liver from chenodeoxycholate and glycine, usually as the sodium salt. It acts as a detergent to solubilize fats for absorption and is itself absorbed.... Deoxycholic acid A cytolytic agent injected subcutaneously to improve the appearance submental fat. Taurocholic acid The product of conjugation of cholic acid with taurine. Its sodium salt is the chief ingredient of the bile of carnivorous animals. It acts as a detergent to solubilize fats... Obeticholic acid A bile acid analog and farnesoid X receptor agonist used to treat primary biliary cholangitis in adult patients with inadequate clinical response or intolerance to UDCA. Chenodeoxycholic acid A bile acid used for the treatment of primary biliary cirrhosis. Taurochenodeoxycholic acid Taurochenodeoxycholic acid is likely indicated as a choleretic and cholagogue. It is also being investigated for its role in inflammation and cancer therapy. Tauroursodeoxycholic acid The taurine conjugate of ursodeoxycholic acid with antiapoptotic and ER stress response dampening effects used in some countries to treat gallstones. It is also being investigated for a wide variety of other conditions. Bamet-UD2 Bamet-UD2 is a novel bile acid-platinum derivative. cis-Diamminechlorocholylglycinateplatinum(II) Not Annotated Dehydrocholic acid No approved therapeutic indications. Hyodeoxycholic Acid Hyodeoxycholic Acid has been used in trials studying the treatment of Hypercholesterolemia. Aramchol Aramchol has been used in trials studying the treatment of HIV, Gallstones, Fatty Liver, Metabolic Syndrome, and Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis, among others. Ox bile extract Not Annotated Glycocholic acid The glycine conjugate of cholic acid. It acts as a detergent to solubilize fats for absorption and is itself absorbed. NCX-1000 NCX-1000 is under investigation in clinical trial NCT00414869 (Preliminary Efficacy and Tolerability of NCX-1000 After Repeated Oral Doses in Patients With Elevated Portal Pressure). norUrsodeoxycholic acid norUrsodeoxycholic acid is under investigation in clinical trial NCT03872921 (Norursodeoxycholic Acid vs Placebo in PSC).
