Benzgalantamine is a prodrug of galantamine, a competitive and reversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitor used in the management of mild-to-moderate dementia in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Gastrointestinal adverse effects are the most frequently reported side effects in patients undergoing treatment with cholinesterase inhibitors, including galantamine, and are often a reason for treatment discontinuation.

Galantamine, the active moiety of benzgalantamine, is a reversible and competitive inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase. It inhibits the hydrolysis of acetylcholine by acetylcholinesterase, thereby increasing the concentration of available acetylcholine.
Although the underlying etiology of Alzheimer's disease is largely unclear, it appears that acetylcholine-producing neurons degenerate in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease and that the degree of this degeneration correlates with the degree of cognitive impairment and density of amyloid plaques. By increasing the concentration of available acetylcholine, galantamine may enhance cholinergic function and improve dementia symptoms.
