Miscellaneous agents found useful in the symptomatic treatment of diarrhea. They have no effect on the agent(s) that cause diarrhea, but merely alleviate the condition.

Drug Drug Description Loperamide A long acting antidiarrheal used to control nonspecific diarrhea and chronic diarrhea caused by inflammatory bowel disease, or gastroenteritis. Diphenoxylate An antidiarrheal medication used with atropine to manage diarrhea. Bismuth subsalicylate An antidiarrheal and anti-inflammatory agent used for symptomatic treatment of nausea, indigestion, upset stomach, diarrhea, and other temporary discomforts of the stomach and gastrointestinal tract. Kaolin A natural ingredient used for the short-term symptomatic treatment of various conditions including diarrhea, skin dryness, and minor skin bleeding. Polycarbophil Polycarbophil is used to treat constipation and to help maintain regular bowel movements. Carob An extract from Carob used in allergy testing. Opium A medication used to treat moderate to severe pain. Racecadotril An anti-secretory enkephalinase inhibitor useful in the treatment of diarrhea.
