A glycoprotein hormone secreted by the adenohypophysis (PITUITARY GLAND, ANTERIOR). Thyrotropin stimulates THYROID GLAND by increasing the iodide transport, synthesis and release of thyroid hormones (THYROXINE and TRIIODOTHYRONINE). Thyrotropin consists of two noncovalently linked subunits, alpha and beta. Within a species, the alpha subunit is common in the pituitary glycoprotein hormones (TSH; LUTEINIZING HORMONE and FSH), but the beta subunit is unique and confers its biological specificity.
- ATC Classification
Drug Drug Description Thyrotropin alfa A recombinant form of thyroid stimulating hormone used in diagnostic testing for thyroid cancer and alongside radioactive agents to destroy thyroid tissue. Tiratricol A metabolite of T3 and T4 thyroid hormones; promoted for hyperlipidemia, localized lipodystrophy, and obesity. Tiratricol has been used in trials studying the treatment of Allan-Herndon-Dudley Syndrome. Liothyronine A thyroid hormone replacement therapy used to treat hypothyroidism, to suppress TSH, and to help in the diagnosis of hyperthyroidism. Levothyroxine A synthetic T4 hormone used to treat hypothyroidism that can be used along with surgery and radioiodine therapy to manage thyrotropin-dependent well-differentiated thyroid cancer. Liotrix May be used to treat primary, secondary or tertiary hypothyroidism. May also be used to suppress thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) secretion in patients with simple (nontoxic) goiter, subacute or chronic... Thyroid, porcine A naturally-occurring peptide hormone used for the replacement therapy for hypothyroidism of any etiology, treatment for euthyroid goiters, and management of thyroid cancers. Follitropin A form of recombinant human follicle stimulating hormone used to stimulate follicle development in women with primary ovarian hypogonadism and in men with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Teriparatide A recombinant parathyroid hormone used for the treatment of osteoporosis. 3,5-diiodothyropropionic acid DITPA has been investigated in Congestive Heart Failure. Carbimazole For the treatment of hyperthyroidism and thyrotoxicosis. It is also used to prepare patients for thyroidectomy. Propylthiouracil A thiourea antithyroid agent used to treat hyperthyroidism. Methimazole A thionamide antithyroid agent that inhibits the actions of thyroid peroxidase, leading to a reduction in thyroid hormone synthesis and amelioration of hyperthyroidism. Dibromotyrosine Not Available Potassium perchlorate No current FDA- or EMA-approved therapeutic indications. Methylthiouracil Not Annotated Benzylthiouracil Not Annotated Potassium Iodide An oral antithyroid agent used for the prevention of radioactive iodine uptake into the thyroid gland during a nuclear radiation emergency. Protirelin A synthetic analogue of thyrotropin-releasing hormone that has been used during diagnostic tests to evaluate function of the thyroid gland. Parathyroid hormone An analog of human parathyroid hormone (PTH) used to treat hypocalcemia caused by hypoparathyroidism. Salmon calcitonin A synthetic peptide form of calcitonin used to inhibit bone resorption in the treatment of hypercalcemia, osteoporosis, and Paget's disease. Abaloparatide A parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) analog used for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women with a high risk of fracture. Thyrotropin Thyrotropin is under investigation in clinical trial NCT01348191 (Detection of Thyrotrophin Receptor in Human Myometrium). Elcatonin Not Annotated 3,5-Diiodotyrosine A product from the iodination of MONOIODOTYROSINE. In the biosynthesis of thyroid hormones, diiodotyrosine residues are coupled with other monoiodotyrosine or diiodotyrosine residues to form T4 or T3 thyroid hormones... Tetraiodothyroacetic acid Not Available
